Conygar Camp hillfort is a small, somewhat triangular univallte hillfort with a probable entrance in the Westernmost ‘point’. The rampart is now 3 foot at its tallest, and was said to have circled the hilltop in the early 19th century. There is an internal mound, thought to be a ‘pillow mound’ or rabbit warren – a not uncommon feature of hillforts, which provided high, dry and relatively sheltered ground for Medieval warreners to build their warrens in. It is thought that this mound gave the hill its name – coney being the Medieval word for rabbit, ultimately derived from the Latin cuniculus.
