Wick Ball Camp, Wiltshire
Wick Ball Camp is an Iron Age hillfort, univallate on the north and west sides. The term ‘Wick’ often indicates the presence of a vicus – a Latin term for a settlement outside the walls of a Roman fort. Additionally, the term ‘ball’ often denotes a boundary, and is a shortening of the word ‘bailiwick’. Another variant is contained in the phrase ‘beyond the pail’, literally outside the pail, or bail (or in this case ‘ball’).
