Billy and Dec’s Bronze Age Youtube Transcription Adventure.
While I was watching one of my all time favourite experimental archaeology videos the other day, I noticed that Youtube was offering an on-the-fly transcription. Out of idle curiosity, I clicked on it and found the results baffling, poetic, funny, and baffling.
Seeing as it might draw more attention to Billy and Dec’s masterwork of public engagement (the secret is, give them lots of free beer), I thought I’d do a point by point human vs. Youtube transcription comparison. You can find the results underneath the video, which I strongly suggest you watch first. And when you’ve finished, you may want to watch it again.
Because one day, you too may have ‘no doubt at this point forks were used for making me all virgin right now.’

Billy: ‘This is my version of a fulacht fia. it’s very very rudimentary but it has to be – we’re dealing with the Bronze Age. Conventional explanation for fulacht fias is that they were used for cooking sites. You fill the trough with water, heat your stones in a fire, deposit the stones into the water, add a, add some meat, and over a period the meat is brought to the boil. We’re turning that notion on its head an reinterpreting the function of the monument. We believe that boiling makes it horrible. Roasting is much quicker, less labour intensive, and nine out of ten people would agree that it tastes nicer.’[/one_half][one_half_last]

Billy: ‘Four mime-version felicia. Story very rudimentary but have switched because we’re dealing with the bronze age. Convention explanation for for the fears is that they were cues for co concerts. Dec: ’This comes directly from our pit in the ground, our fulacht fia. This is a four day old brew. We’ve got approximately a hundred and ten litres of it, out of three hundred litres of water. We could have made three hundred litres of it, but we only made a hundred and ten.’ [/one_half][one_half_last]

I figure it’s becaue North Cork, very good arable land, and being able to raise a lot of good crops there. And also, stone’s important. So, we’re trying to be as elemental in our approach as possible. And we’ve had to use the quipment that would be available to Bronze Age men. Minus buckets, Milton and scrubbing brushes.’ [/one_half][one_half_last]

Dec: ‘We’ve invited loads of people over for a taste of our Bronze Age beer, and to see the whole process and we’re going to demonstrate the whole process to them, and make another beer. And of course it’s going to be different in taste to this one, because each, each brew tastes completely different. First brew we used elderflower, but last week the elderflower all ran out – elderflower season’s over, so, bog-myrtle and meadowsweet – that’s what we’re using this time. So, whatever you’ve got to flavour it, you use to flavour your new beer, so every month it’s going to be a different beer, so it’s, and it’s wow – it’s like a, it’s a real grainy taste, a real malty taste, real malty taste to it, but ah, a real deep flavoursome taste as well.’ [/one_half][one_half_last]

Dec: ‘Ah the barley, it’s malted barley, ah, and so, what’s happening now is with, we’re putting more heat into it, putting the heated water onto it, the enzymes in it, they’re breaking the starches down into sugars, so the ba, the water in it is turning into sort of a sweet barley water. We’re going to add about fifty kilogrammes of malt barley to it. And, the general rule is about five times to one. So, fifty kilogrammes of barley, three hundred kilogrammes, or, three hundred litres of water. So we have about three hundred litres of water in there at sixty five, well, it’s probably around sixty degrees, and, that’s all going to turn into a sweet, what they call a wort, which is your basis for a beer. And we’re going to draw the water off, and then bail it into, ah, fermenting containers, and ah, and then leave to to ferment for three days, and, and we’re just adding brewer’s yeast, we’re not relying on wild yeast, at the minute.’ [/one_half][one_half_last]
